A Yo-Yo card

May 24, 2020 Sidelle Menon 17 Comments

Hey everyone,

The 90's kids played with a lot of cool toys and yo-yo's were one of them. A yo-yo is a toy consisting of an axle connected to two disks, and a string looped around the axle, similar to a spool. It is played by holding the free end of the string known as the handle, allowing gravity to spin the yo-yo and unwind the string. When I saw the current challenge at the butterfly challenge, I was pumped up to make this card. The colors are inspired by mood board at Altenew. Stamps used are Peony Scrolls and the sentiment is by Wplus9. Stencil is Mini Punchinela by The Crafters Workshop. Added a butterfly sequin the yo-yo end.

Instant Recycled Christmas Card

May 22, 2020 Sidelle Menon 23 Comments

Hello everyone!

Recently, I won the April Technique Challenge at 52 Christmas Card Throwdown and was invited as a guest designer for their upcoming challenge.

The challenge is:

Since its an embossing challenge, I was a bit hesitant at the start as I do not own any Christmas stamps nor dies. While going through my stash of old Christmas cards, I found one card which gave me an idea for an instant Christmas card. Along with some Christmas patterned paper from an old pack, I glued down the image to create this fun grid look. I heat embossed the edges of the patterned paper to get a nice gold effect that would match the colors of the image. I love making such instant cards as they are so versatile and at the same time I get to recycle old cards!

Favourite Color to pair with Purple - Mixed Media Card

May 12, 2020 Sidelle Menon 46 Comments

Hello everyone!

For the last few days, I have been enjoying making mixed media projects and thus I decided to make a mixed media card today. Purple along with shades of blue has been one of my favourite colors to work with and thus I decided to use them today as I was trying out something new. I have a few bottles of food coloring out of which I have not used the purple color for a while. For the background, I stacked and glued together scraps of patterned paper and clothing tags. Recycling such things give me pure joy! Once I finished gluing down the papers, I added a coat of gesso and used some modeling paste with one of my stencils. After that, I started adding drops of purple food coloring here and there and sprayed water. While doing this, the purple color started to bleed - it gave me shades of blue so I did not need to add any more blue colors. I worked a lot on the background and added a few drops of purple acrylic paint too so that the background could be purple. When the background was dry, I added splatters of black paint and white gesso.

For the focal point, I wanted to use a butterfly and found this stamp by Stampendous to be the best fit. I colored the stamp with different shades of purple and blue. I added some bandage cloth and lace to give a definition to my element. Once I was happy with the placement, I added the butterfly, a sentiment from an old card and a few sequins to finish off the card. I really loved the outcome as it was achieved by playing around with the purple food coloring and I will be having many more posts including it in the coming weeks.

Altered Gift Box

May 10, 2020 Sidelle Menon 45 Comments

Hey!

Being a chocolate lover, I tend to hoard a lot of chocolate boxes. Today, I decided to alter one of them and change it into a gift box. I was inspired by the colors of the splashy mix mood board and decided to use my Papericious - Pretty Basic patterned paper pack.
I started off by gluing down strips of the patterned paper to the box. Once that was done, I distressed the edges with my vintage photo distress ink and archival black ink. Then I added a piece of thread around the box to create a web sort of design. For the flowers, I created a bunch of them in different sizes using the same patterned paper and added the beads from an old bracelet for the centers. I started arranging the flowers on the box. After a thousand arrangements, I finally liked this one and glued them down. Next, I added a few sequins to the small flowers, and a few drops of white perfect drops all around the arrangement. As always, I finished off the project with splashes of black paint and white gesso. Can't wait to gift this to somebody!

A Basket Full of Happiness

May 07, 2020 Sidelle Menon 34 Comments

Hey!

Today I have made a spring themed card inspired by the beautiful colors of the mood board by Splashy Mix Challenges. I decided to make Mixed Media flowers for this basket-shaped card. For the flowers, I used the colors - yellow, orange, and red, stamped with a background stamp and added a few splatters of white gesso. For the card, I created the basket by weaving the strips of paper which I distressed with my Vintage Photo ink. After arranging the flowers and the basket on the card base, I cut the edges to get the basket look and added a bow with a sentiment(stamped the word hello) tag.

For everything about you that makes you nice to know - Altered Mixed Media Book Cover.

May 04, 2020 Sidelle Menon 41 Comments

Hey everyone!

Today I have made a Mixed Media Altered Book cover inspired by Maremi SmallArt's latest live. You can find her video here. While thinking about the theme, I saw this beautiful board on Splashy Mix's latest challenge(Inspired by the colors and flowers) and decided that my Papericious - Pretty Basic patterned paper pack would be perfect for this project!

I started by cutting my patterned paper into small squares and stuck them on the cover to form a grid pattern. Next, I added some color t
o the edges with my Distress Ink - vintage photo and black archival ink. Then, I cut out the heart from the pink paper, distressed the edges, and stuck it on the cover. To add some more mediums, I stamped around the heart with a background stamp and some archival ink, added some splatters of diluted gesso and black ink. For embellishments, I realized that the flowers I had did not match the colors of the cover so I decided to make a few flowers out of the remaining patterned paper. I stamped the leaves from my Altenew stamp set on to white cardstock, colored it with my watercolor pencils, and fussy cut it. Arranging the flowers and leaves took some time but once I liked how it looked, stuck them with my hot glue gun. I cut out the sentiment from an old card, distressed the edges, and stuck it. To finish the card, added a few sequins and perfect pearl drops.

Herringbone Technique Card

May 01, 2020 Sidelle Menon 15 Comments

Hey!

Hope everyone is safe!

India has been in lockdown for a month and it has been extended for the next two weeks to curb the spread. During this time, I thought that it would be perfect to use up my stash of supplies. While looking for inspiration, I came across the current 52 Christmas Card Throwdown challenge - Herringbone Technique and decided it would be fun to use my stash of patterned paper which I have been hoarding for years. Christmas is undoubtedly my favorite festival that I celebrate every year as it brings so much joy to each and every one!

For the Herringbone technique, all that you need is a bunch of patterned/colorful papers. The papers which I have used today are almost five years old and are amongst my first ever paper pack purchases. To make the background, I first cut the papers into strips of various sizes. Once that was done, I followed a youtube tutorial to make the design. At the start, I decided to make just two cards. When I finished my second background, I had many strips that were left so I decided to make another background. After my third background, a few strips were still there and, I just could not get myself to throw them away, so I decided to make another background.

Once I finished all four backgrounds, I added a black strip of paper all around the borders and stuck them to the card base. The card base is made out of paper from my dad's old documents. For embellishments, I decided to keep it simple. I love decorating Christmas trees with a different theme every year, so I drew four different trees on the paper, colored them with my watercolor paints, and added a few sequins as a little bit of sparkle will not do any harm. After adding a strip of black paper all around the border, I stuck it to the cards and decided that it looked terrific this way!
